1892 Paulding County Courthouse

Named for George Mifflin Dallas, Vice President under President James K. Polk, Dallas has been the county seat since 1851. Prior to its founding, Dallas was a crossroads of Cherokee Indian paths, and the abundance of natural springs brought settlers into the area. In May 1864, Dallas was the site of intensive fighting during the Atlanta Campaign of the Civil War. The Confederate forces held firm at Dallas, New Hope Church and Pickett's Mill, forcing the Union Army east towards Kennesaw.

Towering over the city, the red-brick Queen Anne-style Paulding County Courthouse was built in 1892 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today Dallas has a population of about 7,697 people. A 10-acre park and expansion of the downtown area have resulted from its charm and downtown retail potential.

The City operates under a mayor and council form of government with a city manager. The charter provides for a mayor and six council members. The Mayor and City Council meet the first Monday of each month at 7 PM in the Dallas City Council Chambers at City Hall.
